Asherfall

FiberBackbone

BlueNet

The FiberBackbone is the high-speed data transmission infrastructure that forms the physical foundation of BlueNet connectivity across Asherfall. It consists of over 10,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables running underground, installed parallel to the RailwayNetwork to ensure accessibility for maintenance and protection from surface hazards. The backbone provides 100 Gbps data transmission capacity, enabling high-speed communication, data transfer, and network connectivity across all six Collectives. The infrastructure was pioneered by Collective-4, Vectis, whose engineers established the open-source standards that govern BlueNet operations.

The FiberBackbone connects DataHubs, SurfaceTowers, and other BlueNet infrastructure components, providing the high-capacity links necessary for inter-Collective communication and data exchange. The underground placement protects the cables from Ash-fog corrosion, creature activity, and surface environmental damage, though the cables remain vulnerable to seismic activity, excavation accidents, and deliberate sabotage. The Engineering Corps maintains the FiberBackbone, with access points located along the railway corridors for inspection and repair. Any significant disruption to the FiberBackbone can sever BlueNet connectivity between entire regions, making it critical infrastructure that requires constant protection.
